How much of all the money in crypto sits in bitcoin. Two daily counts of the whole market, drawn side by side (a public market-wide tally — our own daily pull since 2026-05-27, a history loaded in bulk before it — and mirrored snapshots of a second public tally), plus a third line that needs only bitcoin and ether — and reaches back to 2017.
59.7% bitcoin, ether and the stablecoins · bitcoin on Oct-22 2026, the last day in this build, read from a public record, published by askthetape.com.
Add up what every coin is worth and ask how much of that total is bitcoin. On 2026-10-22 it was 59.66% — +0.82 points against 2026-09-22, thirty days earlier. Take the stablecoins out of the denominator and the same day reads 65.57%, because roughly 9.00% of the market is dollars pretending to be coins. 🩸 the number is a RATIO OF PRICES TIMES SUPPLY, not money moving: bitcoin's share rises whenever the other coins fall harder than it does, and nobody has to sell a single altcoin for that to happen. We keep two separate daily counts of the whole market — the first is a public market-wide tally (our own daily pull since 2026-05-27, a history loaded in bulk before it), the second mirrored snapshots of a second public tally; 928 days without a missing day on the first, 2,037 on the second — and we draw both, because «the whole market» is a choice, not a fact: the two agree on what BITCOIN is worth (median ratio 1.001) and disagree on what the MARKET is worth. Until 2026-05-20 the gap between them was -6.96 points; since then it is -1.99. The third line asks a smaller question that we can answer nine years back from our own chain data: of the money in bitcoin and ether together, how much is bitcoin. On 2026-10-22 that was 84.79%. It is a two-coin share, not dominance, and the page says so every time it names it. No forecast is drawn here.
| leg | first count: our daily snapshot of a free public market-wide tally (global endpoint, no key), one pull a day since 2026-05-27, the days 2024-04-08 → 2026-05-24 loaded in bulk — btc / eth / usdt / stablecoin shares and the total, bitcoin and ether market caps · second count: snapshots of a second public market tally taken by an open crawler and mirrored into our own table since 2021-03-26 — the day takes the LAST snapshot of the UTC day. We keep and check the snapshots; we do not take them. The crawler has thinned out: a day of the last thirty carries a median of 5 snapshots, against 24 over the whole history, so «hourly» is what the cadence USED to be, not a promise about today. · two-coin share: bitcoin's cap from our own ledger (every unspent coin × our own daily close), ether's from a credited public count, 2017-08-17 → |

| 🩸 dominance is not a flow | a share going up does not mean money left the altcoins for bitcoin. The ratio moves when prices move, and it also moves when a coin is added to or dropped from whatever list the count uses. Read it as «where the market value sits today», never as «where the money went». |
| 🩸 the stablecoins are in the denominator | on 2026-10-22 stablecoins were 9.00% of the total, so bitcoin's plain share (59.66%) and its share of the non-stablecoin market (65.57%) are 5.91 points apart. Both views are on this page; neither is «the real one». |
| 🩸 calibration, measured 2026-10-23 | the two counts were compared on their 928 common days (2024-04-08 → 2026-10-22): correlation +0.67, median difference -6.69 points, worst day -9.83 points. That difference is a STEP, not noise — -6.96 points median over the 772 days before 2026-05-20 and -1.99 points over the 156 days since. And it sits entirely in the DENOMINATOR: bitcoin's own market cap is the same number in both counts (median ratio 1.00), while the first count's «whole market» was 1.13 times the second's before the step and 1.03 times after it. On 2026-10-22 the two read 59.7% and 60.1%. A page that quoted one count alone would have been eight points away from the other for two years and would never have said so. |
| 🩸 the third line is not dominance | «bitcoin against ether only» divides by two coins, not by the market, so it sits far above the other lines by construction — 84.79% on 2026-10-22 against 59.66% for the plain share. It earns its place because it is built from our own market caps and runs from 2017-08-17, through the 2018-02-01 low of 59.83% and the 2021-11-30 low of 66.28%, where the market-wide counts do not reach. |
| 🩸 too young to rank | the first count has 928 days, under the five years this site requires before it prints a rank, so its tile says «day N» instead of a rank. The second count (2,037 days) and the two-coin share (3,354 days) are old enough and do carry one. |
| attribution | both outside sources are credited once, at the foot of this page. The first count is a free public market-wide tally we pull ourselves; the second count is a second public tally, photographed by an open crawler and mirrored here since 2021-03-26: the snapshots are somebody else's work, the keeping, the day rule and every number computed from them are ours. The third line needs no market-wide tally: bitcoin's cap is our own ledger × our own price, ether's a credited public count — but «bitcoin against ether» is a two-coin share, not this page's question, which is why the two market-wide counts stay. |
