Where the bitcoin options bet

The WHOLE Deribit bitcoin option board, photographed every hour: the strike that maximises pain on every expiry, the open bets behind it, and the chance the market is pricing for each strike. Every point on the chart is one expiry, not one day.

$78,000 max pain and the price the board prices · max pain of the 30OCT26 expiry · 35.5 % of all open interest on the board, snapshot taken Oct-23 2026, measured and published by askthetape.com.

For everyone

An option is a bet on a level: a call pays if bitcoin closes above its strike, a put if it closes below. Deribit is the venue whose bitcoin option book we capture — we do not measure its share of the market here, and this page does not need it: its board carries 930 live instruments across 12 expiries with 386,339 bitcoin of open bets on it. This page photographs the whole board every hour and reads three things off it. FIRST, max pain: the strike where the open contracts in the expiry would have the smallest combined payout — the argmin over the exchange's own strikes of Σ (open interest × intrinsic value), counted in dollars — printed for every expiry next to the forward price that expiry trades at, and led by the expiry that carries the most open interest. 🩸 it is NOT a magnet — we tested that on ether: over 152 daily expiries price moved toward max pain in the last 8 hours 63 % of the time, and toward its own 72-hour average 64 % of the time, so the pull is ordinary mean reversion wearing a costume (measured 2026-09-18). SECOND, the open bets by expiry, calls against puts, in contracts — one contract is one bitcoin. THIRD, the table below: for every strike, the chance the market is pricing that bitcoin closes above it — N(d2), the risk-neutral probability, which is what a bet on that level would cost. 🩸 that chance is NOT the delta: delta is a hedge ratio, it is bigger, and reading it as a chance is the commonest way to be wrong about an option board — out of the money it runs about a third high, and the pro table below prints the measured gap. Both numbers are in the table, labelled, and neither is a forecast: they are prices, and an option price carries a premium for volatility and for tail risk. 🩸 and this page is YOUNG: our own capture starts 2026-09-19, so the chart is a snapshot of the board, not a history of it — the history begins now.

For the pro

leg`data/own/deribit_board/BTC/<day>.jsonl.gz` — our own hourly snapshot of the WHOLE board through Deribit's keyless public endpoint `get_book_summary_by_currency` (one gzip member per snapshot, every field the exchange returns). The page's numbers are computed from it by `opt_board_extract.py` on every build.
cadencemeasured on this build: 22 snapshots on 2026-10-23, median 3600 s apart — hourly. 🩸 that is NOT 24 a day and the page never says it is: the carrier was switched on at 09:32Z, so the first day is short by construction.
since2026-09-19 — the first day of our own capture. The board of 2026-09-19 is the first day on this page; every number here is one snapshot (21:03Z), not an average of a day.
🩸 the x axis is an EXPIRY, not a dayevery point on every chart here is one expiry of the board as it stood at 21:03Z on 2026-10-23. That is why the chart reaches into 2027: those are the dates the contracts die, not days we have data for, and why the line BREAKS on the right — Deribit lists dailies for the next few days, then weeklies, then quarterlies, so between Jun-25 2027 and Sep-24 2027 there is no contract to draw through and the engine refuses to invent one. A history of max pain over time needs days of capture we do not have yet — it starts accumulating from 2026-09-19.
🩸 «chance» is the market's risk-neutral N(d2) — and it is not a forecastthe big number in every cell is N(d2) from Black-76 on the instrument's own mark_iv: the risk-neutral probability of closing above that strike, which is what a digital option on that level would cost. It is NOT a forecast — it is a price, and the price of an option carries a premium for volatility and for the tail, so far strikes read high even here. 🩸 DELTA IS NOT THAT NUMBER: delta = N(d1) is a hedge ratio, and on out-of-the-money strikes it OVERSTATES the chance — measured on this snapshot, by up to 9.8 points, and on the worked example below by about a third (26MAR27 $94,000: delta 35 % against a chance of 27 %). Delta is printed in the cell as «Δ», clearly marked, because it is the number desks quote and the number our own watch was quoting on 2026-09-19 before this page existed.
🩸 the same chance, priced a second way — from the market, not from a formulanext to N(d2) each cell carries «dig»: the same probability read straight off the PRICES of the two neighbouring strikes — a digital spread, (C(K−ΔK) − C(K+ΔK)) / (2ΔK) on the exchange's own mark prices, converted to dollars with that expiry's forward. It knows nothing about Black-76 or about implied volatility. Measured on this snapshot over 192 cells: median gap 1.4 points, worst 5.8 at $64,000 on 26MAR27 — the worst cases sit where the strike grid is coarse and the two neighbours stand far apart, which is the approximation showing its own error rather than a disagreement about the market.
🩸 our delta against Deribit's own greeksthe payload of our carrier has NO greeks, so both numbers are computed here: Black-76 from the instrument's mark_iv, its strike, ITS OWN forward (Deribit quotes a different underlying per expiry) and the time to 08:00 UTC of the expiry day, r = 0 — N(d2) for the chance, N(d1) for the delta. The delta is what can be checked against the exchange itself, and it was: `public/ticker` on 20 instruments spanning 9 expiries and both sides gives max |our delta − Deribit's delta| = 0.00003 (2026-09-19). That check proves the ARITHMETIC, not that delta is a chance — it is not. The control is in `opt_tools/opt_delta_check.py` and its output is kept in `data/own/opt_delta_check.json`.
🩸 the put side gives the same number — and that is NOT a confirmationevery strike carries a call and a put, and each side has a delta: N(d1) for the call, and for the put 1 − |delta| comes back to the same N(d1). We get matching call and put deltas here by construction; that agreement does not measure the chance. They agree here exactly — median 0.00 points apart, never more than 0.0 over 195 cells — and the agreement proves nothing about our arithmetic either, because it is TRUE BY CONSTRUCTION: Deribit quotes ONE implied volatility per strike for both sides (measured on this snapshot: 195 of 195 call/put pairs carry a bit-identical mark_iv), and with one volatility a put's delta is just the call's minus one. We print it because the opposite claim — «both sides of the board agree, so the number is checked» — is the kind of thing that sounds like evidence and is not. The check that IS evidence is the one above, against Deribit's own greeks; the chance itself is the N(d2) in the table, not either delta.
🩸 the chance is not a product you can buyDeribit lists no binary options, so «35 % to close above $90,000» is not a ticket anyone sells: a clean bet on that level is a three- or four-legged structure and you cross the spread three or four times to put it on. That is part of why the delta reads generous — the premium for volatility and for the tail is priced into every leg you would have to buy. (Checked in our own notes on the venue's product list, 2026-07-11; the board we capture carries calls and puts only.)
🩸 which expiry the headline number belongs tothe big number at the top is the max pain of the expiry that carries the MOST open interest on this snapshot — 30OCT26, 35.5 % of the 386,339 bitcoin open on the whole board — and not of the furthest date on the axis. The far right of the chart is a quarterly that holds a few per cent of the board, and its strike is not the board's centre of gravity. The flat line across the chart is that headline strike; the stepped line is max pain expiry by expiry.
🩸 in which unit the pain is counted — and what changes if you switchthis page counts pain in DOLLARS: Σ open interest × intrinsic value in USD. Deribit's bitcoin options are INVERSE and settle in coin, so the same sum in coin terms (intrinsic ÷ settlement price) is a different number, and the strikes move: 30OCT26 $78,000 in USD vs $79,000 in coin · 27NOV26 $81,000 in USD vs $81,000 in coin · 25DEC26 $75,000 in USD vs $78,000 in coin · 26MAR27 $76,000 in USD vs $78,000 in coin. The dollar convention is the default here because it is the one every quoted «max pain» uses; the coin figure is printed next to it rather than hidden, and both are computed on this build from the same snapshot.
🩸 max pain is not a magnet, and this is the measurementthe experiment (2026-09-18, ether, 152 daily expiries): price moved toward max pain over the last 8 hours before settlement in 63 % of them — and toward its own 72-hour average in 64 %. Max pain and that average sit on the SAME side of price in 84-92 % of cases, and where they disagree the score is 12:11. A partial backfill (Deribit boards of the 1st of each month, 2019 →, BTC and ETH) gives 56 %, not significant. So: the number is printed here because it is what the board says, not because price is pulled to it.
🩸 units: coins, not dollarsDeribit quotes bitcoin options IN BITCOIN — open interest is in contracts of 1 BTC and option prices are a fraction of a coin. Every «open bets» number on this page is therefore in BTC, and the only dollars here are strikes and the forward price the exchange publishes per expiry (`underlying_price`), which is NOT the spot: on this snapshot the nearest expiry's forward is $81,362 against an index of $81,361, and the furthest expiry ON THE WHOLE BOARD (24SEP27) is priced at $85,469. We use dollar payouts for the headline and print the coin-payout result alongside it.
🩸 the board changes every dayexpiries are born and die daily on this board (12 live right now, the dailies last days). Nothing here is hard-coded: expiries, strikes, the four in the table and the grid step all come from the payload, and an expiry code this build does not understand is WARNed and skipped, never fatal.
diskmeasured on this build: 62,583,333 B of gzip a day for both currencies at the current cadence (BTC and ETH boards; the ether board is captured too, for a page that does not exist yet). Retention decided by this line: hourly snapshots for 90 days, then the last snapshot of each day — arithmetic on the measured size, not a guess: the standing cost settles at 5632 MB and grows about 952 MB a year after that. The pruner is written (`opt_tools/opt_prune.py`) and is NOT wired to cron: that is the owner's word.
policyno backfill: Deribit does not serve board history, and the paid mirrors are not connected — this page starts where our own capture starts. The prod poller (`deribit_options_snapshots`, front ether expiry only) was not touched or extended for this page. And the export file: the registry knows this series is OURS (class `tape`), and it still does not hand it out — a photograph of an option board is not a daily series, so there is no day-by-day file to give. That reason is printed below in the registry's own words, not hidden as «not declared». · our own capture, and ours to give — but this page is a photograph of an option board, not a daily series: its points are expiry dates, so there is no day-by-day file to hand over
🩸 your level: one pill, 66 addressable framesthe pill «your level» opens $85,000 — the rule, not a choice: the nearest strike ABOVE the index price ($81,361 on this snapshot) that is a multiple of $5,000; if the ladder lists none, the nearest listed strike above the price. Every other strike is a frame of its own and is addressed by key, not by clicking: `/m/btc-options-board/?x=1&ser=opb_k_<strike>` (page: `#ser=opb_k_<strike>`). The machine list of all 66 of them — with the strike as a number and the expiries where that strike actually exists — is /x/keys.json, so a script picks the key instead of guessing it. An unknown strike is a loud error frame (NO SUCH VIEW), never a silent fallback to the default chart.
🩸 the hero of a level frame is the biggest expiry THAT LISTS THAT STRIKEexpiries do not share a strike grid: on this snapshot 12 of the 66 strikes in the band are NOT listed by 30OCT26, the expiry that carries 35.5 % of the board's open interest — the dailies and the near expiry carry the odd thousands, the quarterlies carry the far round numbers. So the headline number of a level frame is the cell of the heaviest expiry AMONG THOSE THAT LIST IT, and when that is not the board's heaviest, the caption says so in words and names the nearest strikes the heaviest expiry does list. The rule lives in the DATA (the first line of every level view is that one number, flat across the axis), not in a caption a later build could forget.
🩸 above or below is decided by the forward OF THAT EXPIRY, never by the pricethe forward is what the option market prices the coin at for THAT date (Deribit publishes one per expiry: 30OCT26 $81,464 · 27NOV26 $81,777 · 25DEC26 $82,125 · 26MAR27 $83,193 on this snapshot), and it is the line that splits «in the money» from «out of it» — not the index price. The difference is not academic. We have 1 strike that sits above the near forward and below the far one. Out of the 66 here, it is the one whose out-of-the-money side FLIPS along the axis, so a number chosen by spot would be the wrong side of the question on exactly that strike. Each point carries the side of its own expiry; where the strike sits on the forward, both sides are near 50 % and the line passes through it without a step.
🩸 a cell with no neighbour gets no numberthe price of a level is read off the two strikes NEXT TO it, so the top and bottom strike of each expiry's own grid have no price of their own. We dropped 3 such cells from this build. Filling them with the formula's N(d2) would look like a market price, and it is not one. A strike with no priced cell at all gets no key. That is why a level line can be shorter than the axis: the gaps are the board's, not ours.
🩸 the price and the formula disagree, and the gap is printedevery level frame carries two flat lines: what the board PAYS for the hero cell (the digital spread over the two neighbouring strikes — market prices, no model) and what the FORMULA says for the same cell (N(d2) from Black-76 on that strike's own mark_iv, r = 0). On this snapshot the widest gap among the 66 hero cells is 4.5 points at $78,000 on 30OCT26 (price 13.1 % against formula 17.6 %), and the median gap is 0.6. Far out of the money the formula reads high — the same class of error that reading DELTA as a chance produces, only smaller. The number the watch should quote is the price.
