Which months were kind to ether

Every calendar month and every quarter of ether since the Binance tape opens, one bar per year: pick a period and see all of its years at once, with the median of them as a dashed line. The month and the quarter we are in are hollow and count for nothing.

+0.7 % October · median of 9 years · 6 of 9 up · best +42.9 % (2021) · worst -14.7 % (2018) · last closed month Sep 2026 · October 2026 so far: 22 of 31 days (running, hollow, in no count), Sep-30 2026, measured and published by askthetape.com.

For everyone

«Best Q3 ever for ether». «September is the cursed one». The claim travels and the instrument behind it usually does not, so here it is on a public tape anyone can re-pull: pick a month or a quarter above and every one of its years is a bar — the plain close-to-close move from the last close of the previous period to the last close of that one. The dashed line is the MEDIAN of those years, not the average, because on a nine-year tape one year owns an average outright: January averages +15.4 % and its median is +0.1 %, because of 2021 alone. Under the bars the plate says how many of those years finished up and which year was the best and the worst, with the year named. Read the count before you repeat a season: 9 or 10 observations per month is a handful and eight or nine quarters is fewer still. The month and the quarter we are in right now are drawn hollow and are in no median, no count and no record until they close.

For the pro

legpublic daily klines of Binance ETHUSDT (the exchange's public klines endpoint, interval 1d, keyless), captured by fetch_eth_daily.py into data/eth_daily_binance.csv, last re-pulled 2026-10-23 21:19Z: 3354 closed daily closes 2017-08-17 → 2026-10-22. Month close = the last daily close of that calendar month, UTC; quarter close = the last daily close of that calendar quarter; move = that close over the previous period's close − 1: one bar per year, close to close. Nothing is interpolated, nothing is backfilled from another venue and no second source is spliced in.
🩸 the seamthere is exactly one and it is at the start: the Binance ETHUSDT pair opens on 2017-08-17, so the first CLOSED month of this leg is September 2017 (August 2017 is partial — it has no previous month close to measure against and is not drawn) and the first closed quarter is Q4 2017 (Q3 2017 is partial for the same reason). Ether traded before this tape did; those years are NOT on this page and no number here pretends to cover them.
cadenceone bar per calendar month and one per calendar quarter; a bar appears the day the period closes. A single month's view therefore gains one bar A YEAR by construction — that is the instrument, not a stale feed, and no «source is quiet» plate is drawn on this page for that reason. The daily leg itself is re-pulled every build (3 days of tail), and the freshness gate judges the page by the daily capture, not by the bars. The running month is drawn hollow from the last daily close on Free; on Tape it is measured to the hourly Bitstamp pull, and on Desk to the live price — the same bar, a fresher price.
🩸 how few observations this is9 or 10 observations per month and 9 per quarter. Nine Septembers is not a law and this page will not pretend otherwise: significance — none claimed, no test is run, no p-value is printed, and the median is shown instead of the average precisely because a single year can own an average (January: mean +15.4 % against a median of +0.1 %, driven by 2021 alone).
🩸 the running month and quarter are hollowOctober 2026 is drawn as a hollow dashed bar at -11.05 % so far (22 of 31 days) and Q4 2026 at -11.05 % so far (22 of 92 days); both are excluded from every median, every «N of M up» count and every best/worst on this page. A period joins the numbers the day it closes — so «best quarter ever» is a claim about a bar that has not printed yet.
🩸 the first view follows the calendarthe view that opens the page and the card is the month we are in — in September it is September — then the other eleven in calendar order, then the four quarters, and «every closed month» last. The rule is machine-checked, so the page never opens on a month nobody is asking about.
