Bets closed by force

When a leveraged bet goes too far against its owner, the exchange closes it by force: longs (bets on a rise) are wiped out when price falls, shorts (bets on a fall) when it rises. Dollars wiped out per day on the 12 exchanges whose liquidation broadcasts we capture ourselves: Binance, Bybit, OKX, Gate, Aster, Lighter, Bitget, HTX, Deribit, Kraken Futures, Hyperliquid, dYdX. Before Oct 8 2026 only dYdX and Hyperliquid are in the sum. avg over 5 closed days with all 12 exchanges: $469368924.

For everyone

When a leveraged bet goes too far against its owner, the exchange closes it by force and broadcasts the event. We listen to those broadcasts on Bybit, OKX, dYdX and Binance and add up the dollars per day — each feed on the coins it actually broadcasts, which is not the same list on all four, longs and shorts apart. Bybit also broadcasts every contract it lists, about 1,040 of them: that is the every-contract view, and on a typical day the 21 coins carry about 57% of its dollars, less on quiet days when the long tail dominates. Gate has no broadcast: only a public window of the last half hour, which we poll every five minutes since June. Hyperliquid has no liquidation feed at all: we label liquidation fills through our own wallet registry, so that leg is a lower bound, not the whole exchange. Neither Gate nor Hyperliquid joins the four-exchange total, and neither does the every-contract view: the total is four exchanges, and they do not cover the same ground: Bybit, OKX and the Binance delivery stream broadcast the same 21 coins; dYdX only 3 (BTC, ETH, SOL); the first Binance stream only 4 (BTC, ETH, MON, SOL). The four-exchange view changes composition along the way: Binance is in it from Mar-31 to Apr-27 2026 on four coins only, then missing until Aug-06, then present on 21 coins — so the middle stretch sits lower AND the two Binance eras are not the same instrument. Only what the feeds broadcast, which is not always everything. Our own liquidation feeds in the sums: Binance, Bybit, OKX, Gate, Aster, Lighter, Bitget, HTX, Deribit, Kraken Futures, Hyperliquid, dYdX. Observed source-reported USD-equivalent; stablecoin quotes at par. Gate is in the sums from Oct 8 2026 11:13Z (exchange fill sizes); its earlier rows are a position-size notional proxy, shown apart. Gate size sign is independently supported for BTC_USDT and extrapolated to other contracts; inverse amounts use a fallback. Lighter side labels are source-reported; trade IDs since Oct 7 2026 22:43Z carry the side flag, checked equal to the label. dYdX reuses our earlier captured events. Hyperliquid uses labelled liquidation fills, a lower bound (empty hour ≠ zero; daily export batch). Bitget pushes only the largest long and short per pair per second. HTX is polled on its first 150 USDT contracts. Deribit arrives about 3 hours late from its trade history. The Kraken Futures side assumes the liquidation engine is the taker. The historical Bitfinex view is a base-price position notional proxy, not execution value, and is excluded from sums. First observed and current periods are partial and drawn hollow. Hourly and daily sums contain only the named sources available at that resolution and time. Execution sums exclude Gate rows before Oct 8 2026 11:13Z and Bitfinex; BTC/ETH/other exclude Hyperliquid because the daily carrier lacks coin labels.

legown websocket capture of liquidation events, 🩸 measured on this leg, feed by feed: Bybit, OKX, the Binance delivery stream carry the same 21 coins (AAVE, APT, ARB, ATOM, AVAX, BTC, DOT, ETC, ETH, HYPE, LINK, MON, MORPHO, ONDO, OP, PENDLE, SEI, SOL, TAO, TIA, UNI), but dYdX broadcasts only BTC, ETH, SOL, and the FIRST Binance stream (2026-03-31 → 2026-04-27) carried just BTC, ETH, MON, SOL — «the same 21 coins on every live feed» was never true · Bybit and OKX since 2026-03-31, dYdX since 2026-04-18 (measured on the leg itself, not assumed) · Binance USDT-margined 2026-03-31 → 2026-04-27, then the Binance delivery stream 2026-08-06 → · no Binance feed in between, so the four-exchange total sits lower over Apr-28 → Aug-05 · Gate: public liq_orders window (~30 min) polled every 5 min, minute sums over all contracts, 2026-06-12 → · Hyperliquid: liquidation fills labelled by joining node fills to our tape through a wallet registry (~2,000 addresses), 2026-07-22 →, a lower bound · Bybit · every contract: the exchange's allLiquidation stream over all 1036 linear contracts, parsed from our own order-book shards, 2026-06-22 → · on the 21 coins it is 1:1 with the live feed day by day (80 days, median ratio 1.00, measured 2026-09-10), so the extra dollars are the long tail · outside the total

🩸 the biggest liquidation days, and why so few · [22.09 VIEWS1]the threshold is a running one — the day's total on the Bybit + OKX feeds against the MEDIAN of the previous 30 days — so it is knowable on the day itself; a «top ten of the tape» would be chosen with hindsight and is not used here. The first 30 days of the capture have no previous window and can hold no event. Ladder on this build, all of it: 3×: 15 days, 15 scored, higher 5, median -0.99 % · 4×: 8 days, 8 scored, higher 4, median +0.08 % · 5×: 5 days, 5 scored, higher 2, median -0.40 %. At 5× the events are 5 days in 2 bursts (Jun-02 → Jun-05 2026 (3 days), Aug-19 → Aug-21 2026 (2 days)), of which 5 days are scored (0 days still inside the 7-day window and drawn hollow): bitcoin higher on 2 of 5, median -0.40 %. The same tape from ANY of its 193 days: higher on 101 of 193, median +0.37 %. A typical day of this tape wipes out $31M; the biggest day here, Aug-19 2026, wiped out $482M. 2 of the 5 scored events do not overlap another's week. The tape is 200 days long — a handful of cases carries no statistics, which is why this view prints counts and no p-value at all.
🩸 which dollars are in that total · [22.09 VIEWS1]the total behind the threshold is Bybit + OKX only: of the feeds in the file this view reads, these are the ones with a row on every one of the 200 closed days since Mar-31 2026 (Binance 105 of 200 · Bybit 200 of 200 · dYdX 171 of 200 · OKX 200 of 200). Binance is silent from 2026-04-28 to 2026-08-05. Read on the tape that adds every feed, the same 5× bar passes 9 days: 3 inside that silence, and 6 on days that had Binance while some of their previous 30 days did not — the median they were measured against was taken on a thinner tape. 4 of those 6 do not pass on the Bybit + OKX tape. That is the tape changing, not the market. Inside those feeds the coin basket grew as well — 3 coins from Mar-31 2026, 4 from Apr-11 and 21 from Jun-07 — so some running medians mix baskets; read on BTC, ETH and SOL alone, the coins heard from the first day, the 5× bar picks the same 5 days (3×: the same 15 days · 4×: 9 days instead of 8).
